Tea, trackies and twin wardrobes: A cosy conversation with Mimi and Simone

BACK TO Paire Lounge

Mimi and Simone are not only mother and daughter, but also best friends. Sharing a love for comfort, their bond is grounded in their shared rituals: swapping wardrobes, cosy evenings spent on the couch, and wrapping up the day with cups of tea.

Theirs is a relationship defined not by grand gestures, but by the deep contentment in simply spending time together.

Their fashion sense, much like their personalities, often overlaps.

“We borrow clothes from each other all the time”, says Simone. “As we’ve gotten older we’ve blended more. Our basic capsule wardrobe is the same.”

Mimi laughs, “I think I borrow from mum more. When we go shopping I often persuade her to buy certain things that can be for both of us.”

Both women agree: comfort isn’t just a luxury, it’s an essential. And for Simone, that comfort starts from the inside out. “My underwear,” she says with a laugh when asked what she prioritises in the morning. “I know that sounds crazy, but if I’m not comfy, I’m not comfy for the whole day.”

Mimi is on the same page. “I dress for comfort definitely. I live in activewear or trackies.”

Ask them what their vision of comfort looks like, and you’ll hear a familiar theme.

“I think of candles, and tracksuits, warm blankets and warm socks,” says Simone. “Being on the couch near someone I love.”Mimi paints a similar picture. “Cosy winters at home. Wearing something that’s super cosy, I love wrapping a hoodie around me.”

Simone adds, “The first thing both of us do when we get home is strip out of day wear and get comfy. A cup of tea on the couch is us summed up. We end the day with a cup of tea and a treat, together.”

As much as their relationship is about shared habits, it’s also been a source of learning and growth. “I’ve learnt everything from Mum”, Mimi says.

Simone reflects on what motherhood has taught her. “To enjoy the small things, and the time we have together. It’s not infinite, and I love the time we get to be together.”

That time has only become more precious as the years have gone by. “We’ve definitely gotten closer,” Mimi shares. “We fight less”, she laughs. “I deliberately have Fridays off so we can have our Fridays together. When people want to catch up on Fridays I’m like ‘sorry, I’ve got plans with mum!’”

“Being at home, knowing mum's there, it’s the best. If I haven’t seen mum for a day or so it feels like things aren’t sane or right in the world”, Mimi says.

Simone sees their evolution clearly. “Our connection has evolved exactly as Lorelai and Rory Gilmore’s has,” she says. “That’s who I kind of picture us as, and so do lots of people in our lives. Mimi’s gone from being my little girl to being my best friend.”

“At the end of everyday we debrief, sit on the couch and watch something together,” says Simone. “Bit of MAFS maybe, bit of a discussion, but together.”

This closeness runs deep. It’s evident as the two reflect on moments when they see each other in themselves. “When I’m with my niece,” Mimi says, “I see little things about how I’ve been brought up. When mum isn’t around, I pick up on her characteristics and personality and bring those to the table when she’s not there too.”

Simone beams. “I see Mimi in me when she’s mothering. And she does a great job of it with me” she laughs. “I see things that I’ve instilled in her coming through in the way that she is.”

Mimi and Simone are proof that comfort is intentional. It’s created through time, treasured moments, and the people who matter most.
