What Eucalyptus Fibre Actually Is
Eucalyptus fibre is a cellulosic fibre made from eucalyptus pulp, produced in a closed-loop process where the solvent is recovered and reused rather than discharged. Structurally it’s very smooth, which is why it feels cool to the touch, and it’s highly absorbent, so it moves moisture readily. What it doesn’t do is resist odour — that’s wool’s contribution. Blending the two gives you the cool handfeel of the cellulosic and the odour resistance and thermal regulation of the Merino, which neither delivers alone.
Isn’t Wool Too Hot for an Australian Summer?
It’s the most common objection, and it comes from experience with coarse, heavy wool knits. Fine Merino in a lightweight knit behaves differently: it absorbs moisture vapour from the skin before it becomes sweat and releases it to the air, which is an actively cooling process. Blend it with eucalyptus fibre for smoothness and you have a fabric that outperforms cotton in heat — drier, cooler, and still fresh at the end of the day.
